An Unusual Phenomenon in Strychnine Convulsions
نویسنده
چکیده
while to test the margin of safety claimed by the British Pharmacopoeia for the maximum dose of some of the toxic drugs ; amongst the many toxic substances that suggested themselves, strychnine was considered the safest, as the antidote is well known and its action almost quantitative. After consideration of all factors it was considered reasonable that I personally should become the subject of study since it would be advantageous from the point of view noting the symptoms and signs, their order of occurrence and their relative severity. The train of symptoms and signs of strychnine poisoning are very well described in textbooks of pharmacology (Sollmann, 1942). It is stated that, with 6 to 7 mg. in man, tautness of muscles and twitchings occur ; and that with toxic doses, convulsions and other phenomena appear. The British Pharmacopoeia maximum dose is well below the toxic dose, and therefore it was considered safe to take the maximum B. P. dose + 25 per cent ; as a safeguard it was proposed to keep ready an ampoule of any one of the barbiturates, so that if the train of untoward symptoms set in it may be administered.

Strychnine poisoning as an unusual cause of convulsions.
A fatal case of strychnine poisoning is presented. The patient vomited then suffered a series of tonic convulsions which were triggered by tactile stimulation. In between paroxysms he was initially alert. Eventually the patient became comatosed due to anoxia and had a cardiac arrest. He presented with a marked metabolic acidosis and rapidly developed renal failure caused by acute rhabdomyolysis...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Effect of Jobelyn® on Chemoconvulsants- Induced Seizure in Mice
Introduction: Epilepsy is a common central nervous system (CNS) disorder characterized by seizures resulting from episodic neuronal discharges. The incidence of toxicity and refractoriness has compromised the clinical efficacy of the drugs currently used for the treatment of convulsions. Thus, there is a need to search for new medicines from plant origin that are readily available and safer for...

Background and Objective: Effects of electeromagnetic exposure on different parts of neruous system and memory of humans and animals has been established. In spite of important human studies, animal studies have been more precise and comprehensive. Extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF, <300Hz), have been reported to induce a variaty of behavioral and physiological function change...
متن کاملGlycine potentiates strychnine-induced convulsions: role of NMDA receptors.
Strychnine poisoning leads to seizures that have traditionally been attributed to competitive antagonism of glycine receptors in the spinal cord. Although glycine is thought to act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, a strychnine-insensitive glycine (Gly2) receptor has been recently described in cultured mouse neurons that is thought to be allosterically linked to the excitatory amino acid NMDA ...
متن کاملThe Control of Strychnine Convulsions by Intraspinal Injections of Magnesium Sulphate
We feel that the results obtained in the human case and in our animal experiments justify the supposition that magnesium sulphate may be of use in controlling cases of poisoning by strychnine. It is a method easily available not only in large hospitals but in private practice, and requires no elaborate technique. The amount of magnesium sulphate to be used should follow the advice of Meltzer (1...
